The first thing I saw was many toy babies placed on each of the many tables in the exhibit. They did not have clothes on and they were holding big cardboard cut-outs of crosses and ticks in their hands. I think that they were trying to promote education from an early age. To me, the ticks and crosses on them showed me who were the ones who usually fails in tests, and who were the ones who usually passes or excels. It could also show us who would fail in life, and who would be successful. The babies with ticks remind me of the young children who are eager to learn, but the ones with crosses remind me of the young children who do not want to learn, and just want to play.
The next thing I saw was a couple of pictures on the right wall. One of the pictures was a class picture of multiracial class, another of a girl sitting at a cafeteria and another of a child playing by herself at a courtyard. To me, the pictures were symbolizing each and every one of them being alone in life. In the class picture, all of them had dull and sad faces on and they were of different races. It reminded me of racism and it looked like they could not get along. The picture of the girl in the cafeteria and the child playing in the courtyard also reminded me of being alone.
The third thing I saw were pictures of food. It was food of all races and it reminded me of racial and religious harmony. Just by using food, they showed us how the different types of food could support each "race". I also think that they used each type of food to symbolize each race.
The fourth thing I saw was a bunch of tables with carvings on them, and with a big screen in front of them. My first thought was that it was a classroom. Each table had a small electronic TV placed in the middle part of each table. I found it really cool at first and thought that it had no significance to anything, but I was wrong. It was linked to a video playing on the big screen. The words in the video were "happy baby, beautiful girl, child abuse, school, social isolation, discrimination, extra marital affair, gst, unemployement, tuition fees, domestic violence, mortgage, superannuation, stock market, freedom, global capitalism, illegal immigration, post imperial nostelgia, avian flu, global warming, intelligence agencies, humanitarian disaster, relief operation, radicalism, terrorist attack, air strike, ethnic cleansing, rape and murder and genocide mass grave. The words written on the tables are meaningful. The flashing pictures in the small electronic TV links with the table it's placed on. For example, Unemployment was one of the topics on one table. It links to the flashing images and the words in the video because Unemployment is one of the words in the video. Unemployment and the issues involving it will also be carved on the table. The same goes for every other word. There will be one table that stresses on one word.
The fifth thing I saw was another video on the screen in front of the tables. It showed a White woman, a Asian woman and a girl teaching us how to do sign language and how it can help you communicate with your baby. The white woman doesn't speak but it's still considered as sign language. All she does is nods her head and gives some eye contact. The Asian woman uses actions and mouths the words. The girl in this video helps the ladies with the sign language. Once the ladies does their sign language for the word, the girl will do it again for us to see. After they do sign language of each word, they will then reveal the word (typed out in a black background).
Letter to one of the things exhibit:
(I'm writing to the baby holding a cross)
Dear Baby,
I can see that you are very positive in life and you will be very successful in the future. How does that make you feel? There is a lot of work ahead of you and you have to prepare yourself for the future as you are still young. Make sure that you work hard and get ahead of your class and make sure that the babies with the crosses, the rebels don't affect you. Just think ahead. Set your priorities straight and you'll do great in life. :)
